Artist Statement
I identify as a mixed media sculptor with a penchant for natural objects. These bits of the natural world, such as bark, moss, shells, wood, pinecones, serve as evidence and triggers for memories, as well as markers of location and time. By altering these and other man-made items in aged cabinets and boxes, the presentation of found objects such as toys, games, and clothes confirms my search for personal and collective historical meaning.
The cabinets and boxes evoke a type of time capsule, where groupings of playthings create sometimes familiar or unsettling connections. I see my creations as micro-worlds, pulling together the beauty of the sensory world with the accumulation of our daily lives. As a woman and a mother, I’ve spent countless hours documenting daily life, trying to document my children’s pastimes and history. My personal and professional life as a curator in some ways merge in my work, and my art becomes a way of reflecting and sharing those moments with others.
